Laptop tested: MacBook Pro unibody 15.4″ (late 2008 model).

Laptop tested: MacBook Pro unibody 17″ (early 2009 model).

Normally I’m not a fan of lapdesks. Most of the time they look ghastly, take up way too much room, and have those annoying “peas” in the material that rests on your legs. At first, they’re fine, until you wiggle around a bit, the peas get pushed off to the side, and your legs end up against the faux wood. Not fun.

Enter Logitech’s Comfort Lapdesk. I was given this as a gift, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give the lapdesk one last try. The results? Awesome. I love it. And I’m surprised I do.

    Why am I so surprised?

1.) It’s comfortable on your lap, even lying in bed.

2.) The underside is made of an airy mesh, so it never warms up at all, but remains quite firm on your legs. Not too firm, as I sit in my shorts writing this in bed. Very cushy but sturdy.

3.) It’s very light, so the added weight of the lapdesk with my laptop on it is not intrusive.

4.) It tilts forward a little so that it’s at a “perfect” angle to type on.

5.) It does actually stand up by itself on its edge, so you can stick it next to your bed without having it slide over and disappear under the bed/sofa etc. Very convenient!

My laptop isn’t running too hot sitting on it, and I can’t comment on the number of layers Logitech says the top part features, but supposedly it’s a 4-layer, heat-shielding design. I can say my laptop isn’t running too warm, and while the top of the lapdesk is a little warm, it’s nothing unusual.

So, are there any complaints? Well, my only concern with the desk is that it IS white, and the top part FEELS like if you slam it around at all, it will likely pick up a myriad of scratches. Mine came with a few out of the box, though I’m sure it wouldn’t have taken me long to do it myself. If Logitech had gone the whole hog and made the top part aluminum, boy would this thing be killer…

Just bear in mind, with my 15.4″ MacBook Pro, there’s no room for a mouse on the side, though I prefer this, as it means the actual lapdesk is smaller and easier to handle. This lapdesk is designed for 15.4″ laptops, though it can handle smaller systems of course. I think a 17″ MacBook Pro “might” be pushing it. (EDIT: works just fine with a 17″!)

As it is, it serves its purpose very well, and is without doubt the most comfortable lapdesk I’ve ever used. I was more concerned with how usable the base is on my legs rather than how astonishingly it removes heat. It does the former excellently, and the latter quite well.

    Great job, Logitech.

    4.5/5

    **EDIT June 17, 2009**

I can report I’m having no trouble with my new 17″ unibody MacBook Pro on this lapdesk. I love it! :-)

Some people have reported their laptops slipping of this lapdesk. I’ve had no such issue with either of my unibody MacBook Pros.

After just a few days of using the Logitech Lapdesk, we love it, and just ordered a second one. The Macbook Pro 17 fits on it perfectly, as if it was made specifically for it, and while my girlfriend uses a much smaller laptop she is equally happy with it.

It seems to work best when sitting normally, and is comfortable even on bare leg. Because of the “lip” bends away from the board’s surface, it even works passably while sitting “indian style,” and works surprisingly well when not on your lap at all! As I write this, I have the lapdesk and laptop next to me on the couch.

I haven’t noticed any scratches on the smooth whiteboard-like surface, but it does seem to be an electrostatic magnet for lint and dust, which fortunately wipes away easily. The surface doesn’t feel tacky, but holds the laptop well in normal use. The laptop will slide if you increase the angle too much beyond normal, but it hasn’t been an issue.

Not only is it useful, but it’s stylish. I haven’t used any competing lapdesks to compare, but I would buy this again.

I looked all over the ‘net for a decent lap desk to use with my new notebook, a 17″ Unibody MacBook Pro. The vast majority of them are hideous kludges made of bizarre plastic parts reminiscent of Rube Goldberg. One lapdesk is just a hollow pillow that sits so high I can’t imagine how it was ever approved for sale.

This Logitech lapdesk desk looks great and is comfortable on both the couch and in bed with my new 17″ Unibody MacBook Pro. The working angle is just about right and the fabric is comfortable on bare legs. The machine fits with about a 3mm of the desk showing front and back, and about 2cm showing on either side.

One of the complaints about the Logitech lapdesk is that the glossy surface is too slippery. I was ready for this with some thin silicone stick-on pads, but so far I have found that it is not slippery–not even marginally so. I believe it can become slippery if I let my greasy Snickerdoodle/Cheesy Poof eating mitts near it, but a little Formula 409 and isopropyl alcohol would solve that. I don’t normally eat when I am messing with my machine anyway.

I have used close to 20 laptop desks in the past decade – varying from a $100 montrosity to a $15 from Ikea – but all of them lacked a certain something. Some were fine for an hour, some were fine for about a minute.

This Logitech Lapdesk has changed all of that – this thing is absolutely perfect in every possible way (except for the price!).

I tested it with 4 different machines – from a 10″ Netbook to a 17″ HP, and on every machine, it just felt right. The design is so utterly simple, it is almost laughable. There are no moving parts, and Logitech didn’t fall for the trick of adding crap like lights and a usb hub – all I want in a laptop desk is a comfortable desk.

The plateau is large and smooth, with no ridges – your laptops non-slip feet keep it in place very well.

The breathable material used is about an inch thick on the front, and gets thicker towards the rear, making it perfect for resting on your legs.

Even after several hours with this thing, I’m not sensing any discomfort at all.

Kudos to Logitech for the simple design. Though I do need to point out my only minor complaint – the price is steep. Not insanely steep, just “ouch”. But trust me when I say that this thing is worth the price, especially if you need some comfort when using your laptop in the livingroom or in bed.

Because the angle is not too steep, it also works very well on a desk, though because of the height on the front, it is not too comfortable to type on in that position.

This does exactly what it is meant to do and it does it in style with loads of comfort. Here is the ‘skinny’:

The device is basically a hard shell of glossy white plastic on the top and mesh covered foam at the bottom. It is curved in such a way that when placed on your lap it elevates the laptop in a perfect manner so as to alleviate the strain that is normally associated with working on your ‘LAP’. The best, and I mean BEST, feature is that this thing keeps your laps from burning up under hot computers. I received this today and started using it the minute it arrived…after about 3 hours I can honestly say I am amazed at the ability.

The laptop I used was a 17″ Unibody Macbook Pro – which incidentally is also covered with a plastic speck case. I have uploaded two images to show you the fit…my aplogies for the image quality. That being said..if this can handle the 17″ Macbook Pro without issue then it can pretty much take any laptop you can throw at at.

The best part is if you have a small laptop and you are using this device…its not inconceivable to put something along side it that may help you become more productive…ie. a mouse.

Excellent product, excellent design, and excellent quality.

5/5 for me. Please view the pix….

Having used this lapdesk for a week, I find that this is a recommendable product even though I believe the msrp is a bit on the high side. Let us evaluate the features as claimed by Logitech’s marketing literature:

    1. Helps protect your body from notebook heat: I totally agree with this.

    2. Positions your notebook to improve comfort: This lapdesk introduce a difference of merely 12 degrees and the truth is I could not feel any significant improvement after a week. I was using a light-weight cutting board before, and the 12 degree difference only means I tilt my screen differently.

    3. Use your notebook on your sofa, bed, or floor: The claim here is it helps provide a stable platform over your legs. Compared to my board solution, I have to agree that this Logitech lapdesk is more stable. Why? The board is rigid and thus it is very unforgiving in its movemnet. This one has cushion underneath which dampens the movement.

    4. Feels comfortable on your legs: The air-mesh material underneath this lapdesk is indeed quite comfortable even on bare skin. However, I would say I still feel the hot spots. (It’s MUCH better than direct contact with the laptop though.) I must also note that this mesh is non-removable. I wish the cushion is only velcro’ed onto the lapdesk and is removable for washing.

    5. Thin, streamlined profile: I am not sure it is “thin” at about 3 inch at the thickest part. However, the current design, as another reviewer has noted, is in fact very effective—this lapdesk stands on its own when placed on the side. It is indeed very convenient and I keep it right next to my reading/laptop lounger.

As you can see, this Logitech scores very well with me on its features. I must add that these features are all delivered on one nicely manufactured piece of furniture. The fabric seams are tight and there is no loose threads hanging around. The plastic used for the laptop surface seems durable and is well-grinded on the side to make sure there is no hard edges at all. I would say that the quality demonstrated by this product can easily justify its premium price, even though I also admit that I would hesitate to buy it if I were to see it at a retail store. The bottomline is: I am recommending it to my friends whoever come over to visit.

P.S. I must also note that unlike some reviewers, I do not find the laptop surface to be slippery at all. I tested this on a 12in thinkpad, a 14in thinkpad, and a 13in sony vaio. Maybe their laptop’s “legs” are missing or getting dirty?

The bottom of the lapdesk is padded. It’s not made of that weird squishy beanbag stuff. It’s more like foam covered in a mesh allowing the foam to breathe a bit.

The heat from the bottom of my laptop isn’t making it through or around the desk to my lap either, therefore eliminating that burning lap problem.

The top of the lapdesk is made of a hard (maybe acrylic?) material, that has so far survived the hot computer battery. It hasn’t warped at all like my old wooden lapdesks so all four padded feet on my laptop are touching giving a bit of space between the battery and the desk so hot air can escape.

The angle is perfect when sitting on the couch with my feet out in front of me or sitting with my legs crisscrossed and the lapdesk resting on my knees/thighs. My wrists seem to be at a natural, comfortable position.

Lastly, it’s good looking. Good product. Would recommend and/or buy as a gift for my laptop-using friends.

I have a “desktop replacement” laptop with high powered graphics and a 7200rpm hard drive on the bottom so this thing is a MUST for deflecting the heat! It has a hard top that keeps my laptop from sliding around and it’s wide enough for my widescreen 17″. Nothing else that I looked at came even close to the quality on this thing. :D

I have been using this wonderful lapdesk with both a 17″ Dell notebook and my ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Black Netbook – 9.5 Hour Battery Life.

The larger notebook tends to get hot when used continuously, so the lapdesk protects both my legs and the computer. I did not have any problems with the computer slipping on the surface, as the computer has little rubber feet on the bottom. There is no room to use an external mouse with this size of computer, but that’s okay with me.

With the netbook, I have plenty of extra space. I occasionally use an external mouse, which works perfectly on the surface. Again, no slipping.

I have toyed with the idea of buying a lapdesk in the past because I prefer to sit on the couch as I use the computer. I really like the sleek, minimalist look of this one and the level of “squish” (not too squishy) of the padded part. It is also very slim compared to some I have seen, which helps me store it out of the way.

I do not comment on an item unless I really like or hate it.

After much research/reading reviews I decided to go ahead and order since if I really didn’t like it I could return it. My biggest concern was the comment of many reviewers who stated their laptops would slide off this laptop desk. That certainly has NOT been my experience. My laptop feels very secure and does not slip or rock, even if it is at sitting on an angle. I have a 17″ Dell XPS which is heavy gaming type of laptop, weighing in at 8-9 pounds. My Dell does have 4 small rubber feet on the bottom which I am sure contributes to this secureness. This desk is also very comfortable on my legs as compared to the hard plastic type I had before. My red and gray Dell really looks nice setting on this desk, displays it very well. It provides safety, comfort, functionality and appearance, in my opinion, covers all the important areas.
